Since January 1, 2014, recreational marijuana businesses have began supplying Colorado cannabis customers. However, numerous state and local regulations governing the cultivation, sale, marketing, and possession of cannabis have been revised or amended in the years since legalization.
You may have questions about where to get marijuana, what cannabis products are available, and how much you can legally buy as cannabis regulations change.
What Has Changed in Colorado Marijuana Limits Since Legalization?
Colorado residents could buy up to one ounce (28 grams) of THC when recreational marijuana became accessible in 2014. Tourists were also restricted to 7 grams.
The law had altered by June of 2016. Tourists and locals alike were suddenly permitted to purchase up to 28 grams of THC. Because of the way Colorado marijuana rules were structured at the time, customers could buy concentrates and edibles in the same quantities as weed, as long as the total didn’t exceed the required 28 grams.
The Marijuana Enforcement Division conducted experiments in the mid-2010s to assess equal THC levels in concentrates and edibles. The premise was that some items, including the best online weed dispensary, had substantially higher THC levels than marijuana flower and can have a far bigger effect on the consumer.
As a result, the laws altered once more in October of 2016.
Adults 21 and older can purchase the following items in a single trip starting in May 2021:
- marijuana flower up to 28 grams (1 ounce)
- cannabis concentrates (up to 8 grams) (oil, wax, shatter, resin, rosin, etc.)
- Edibles with up to 800mg
You may still mix and match flower, edibles, and concentrates, but if you’re buying in quantity, the arithmetic can get a little more tricky.
It’s helpful to remember that 1/8th oz of marijuana flower is equivalent to 1 gram of concentrate or a 100mg edible when planning your next dispensary run in Boulder.
- 1 ounce flower Equals 8g concentration
- 1 ounce flower = 800mg edible
- 1 gram of concentration equals 1/8 ounce of flower 1/8 ounce flower Equals 100mg edible
For example, if you buy 2 grams of concentrate and 200mg of edibles, you’ll get 1/2 ounce of flower. So before you hit your Colorado marijuana limit, you’d only be allowed to buy another 1/2 ounce of flower.
But don’t worry about the math. Your budtender will keep track of your total purchases and alert you if you’re approaching the single buy limit.
While these restrictions are in place for a “single trip,” many dispensaries err on the side of caution and only supply customers once each day.
What is the maximum amount of cannabis you may legally possess at one time?
Governor Jared Polis signed new legislation into law in May 2021 that eliminates civil penalties for acts involving up to 2 ounces of cannabis flower or concentrates. While HB21-1090 has no effect on the amount of cannabis that can be purchased in a single trip, Colorado residents and visitors can now possess up to 56 grams of the drug.
